My auntie has had this before!

She was kind of floating above her body and could see herself sleeping.

She could also move around but not actually know how she was moving... she kind of thought about where she wanted to go and she moved... she only got as far as outside her bedroom before she returned to her body.

And she knows she was definatly not dreaming.

Aparently it's your soul/spirit leaving your body...

I think it is important to study what the soul is and what the spirit is in order to gain a better understanding of OBE. Soul is what gives a physically living entity a personality with feelings. A carrot does not have a soul. A dog does have a soul and therefore a personality. Humans definitely have a soul with personality. The Spirit is what makes humans different from animal kind. Animals do not spend time thinking about what is their meaning or purpose in life. They do not seek revenge because their pride has been offended, they do not show unconditional love to another. Our human spirits are given to us by God, who is Spirit. Therefore we are made in God's likeness. God the Spirit, or the Holy Spirit can and does move and travel and be in all places, all of the time. Our Soul is the part of us which ties the Mind to the Body and gives us personality. Therefore I believe that if our soul was to leave our body, it would mean death, but for our Spirit - or some part of our spirit - to leave our body, our spirit is doing something it was made by God to do. At death, our Spirit survives to go to heaven or hell. In other words it leaves our physical body and travels to a different place.

I believe that if our Spirit left our body, we would need to be unconscious. First reason would be for our soul to allow our spirit to leave. The second reason is that we could not operate with such a major part of us missing. The longer our spirit would be away from our body, the greater the physical and soulish distress we would be under. If the spirit was away long enough, we would die from the stress of being unconscious without our spirit.

OBE is often just sleep paralysis. Since you are in that half asleep state your unconscious can really play tricks on you. I had one once where this shadowy figure at the foot of my bed tried to jump in my body while I was leaving it.

Eventually you just wake up like normal sleep.
